    DESCRIPTION
    -
    N
ew old stock, never used, never displayed - from my own collection.
    - Portraits of the King -- a close-up, off-stage look at Elvis Presley.
    - When the stagelights went dark and the frenzied crowds have all gone home, Elvis sometimes relaxed backstage in his dressing room, or perhaps grabbed a nap en route to his next engagement, or maybe returned to Graceland for the privacy and peace that he cherished so much.  In these rare quiet moments between shows, the King enjoyed a restful interlude alone, perhaps to reflect on the evening's performance, or where he would be for his next one-nighter.  Or maybe something altogether more personal was on his mind.
    - This is the Elvis Presley few people ever got close to, the Elvis that intrigues all of us.  And this is the Elvis that artist David Zwierz has chosen to depict in
    Portraits of the King
    , a new series of limited-edition plates.
A completely new and unique gallery of portraits of the King of rock and roll,
    Portraits of the King
gives us an intimate, insightful, close-up look at the private side of Elvis Presley.
    - In "You're A Heartbreaker," the sixth portrait in artist David Zwierz's
    Portraits of the King
collection, we see a young Elvis whose sensitive eyes and contemplative expression suggests a depth and complexity of personality rarely if ever seen by his fans.  On stage, in concert, Elvis is lively, outgoing, an animated singer of driving rock and roll tunes, and low-down, foot-stomping blues.
    - But away from the screaming, adorning audiences who made him an international star, Elvis could be quietly contemplative, momentarily distant as his thoughts turned inward to reflect upon something personal, private . . . something close to his heart.  That is the Elvis portrayed here by artist David Zwierz.
    - Set against a stark black background, which accentuates by contrast the warm skin tones, this portrait of Elvis seems to breathe with a life of its own.  Dramatic back-lighting and subtle modelling, give the picture an amazing, almost three-dimensional effect.  Elvis's pitch black hair and the turned-up collar of his black leather jacket blend perfectly into the black background, further enhancing the silhouette effect and adding to the visual excitement of the portrait.
    - But the dominant feature of this portrait -- and the dominant feature of every human face -- are the expressive, almost mesmerizing eyes of the King.  The eyes give character to the face.  We may look upon them endlessly, read their expressions for an eternity, and still not comprehend completely the heart and soul of the subject.  Nor can we fully come to know any human being.  And this too, is what artist David Zwierz has depicted in his brilliant portrait of Elvis -- the knowable, and the unknowable.
    - But what is the significance of the title, "You're a Heartbreaker?"  Perhaps it suggests that even though Elvis was loved by millions, and so in a sense was possessed by his audience, he was really possessed by no one.  Elvis loved them all, but with the unique love of a performer for the crowds who witness his performance.  And so the fans who loved Elvis had that love requited -- but only to a degree.  This perhaps is the heartbreak alluded to in the title of this masterpiece of portraiture.
    - There have been countless photographs, drawings, paintings and sculptures made of Elvis Presley, but few have captured the human side of the King so completely and profoundly as this gallery of portraits.  We see in this remarkable art the young man behind the public figure -- although idolized by millions, still vulnerable, sometimes lonely, and perhaps a  bit innocent despite his emergence as an international superstar.  And these are the endearing qualities that gave humanity and depth to Elvis Presley throughout his life and into the years of his maturity, even when he had attained the almost mythical status of living legend.
    - I'm not an artist myself, and I have only a layman's knowledge of art, but everyone here at Graceland -- both those of us who knew and worked with Elvis, and those of us who never had that privilege -- were all very favorably impressed with artist David Zwierz's
depiction of the King.  Each plate in the
    Portraits of the King
collection will present another facet of Elvis Presley's personal side, and I believe they all reveal intimate, seldom-seen aspects of the man behind the superstar performer.  Jack Soden, Executive Director, Graceland.
